Chirptastic Twitter Client For Apple Mac OS X Beta5 Released; Adds Bit.ly and Twitpic Support

Here is Beta5 of my Twitter Client for Apple Mac OS X. This is probably the last beta, next will come the "release candidate" which should be 100% working and if that works out OK then V1 will follow quickly!

Beta5 has some great new features including support for Bit.ly and Twitpic, here are the details:

1) Bit.ly support. bit.ly is a web site that allows users to shorten a long URL, share it, and then track the resulting usage. For example, you can turn this link: maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=New+York+Penn+Station&daddr=9th+Ave+%26+14th+St,+New+York,+NY&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&dirflg=r&date=11%2F12%2F08&time=4:13pm&ttype=dep&noexp=0&noal=0&sort=&sll=40.746175,-73.998395&sspn=0.014468,0.036392&ie=UTF8&z=14 into this link: http://bit.ly/CUjV

This makes it easier to include the links in a Twitter post without taking up too much space. To use Bit.ly in Chriptastic you need to get yourself a Bit.ly account here and and discover your "API Key" here. The API key to allows applications like Chirptastic to shorten links on your behalf. Enter your login name and the API key on the Chirptastic preferences pane.

Now when you enter a long URL and use the shorten function (Edit->Shorten, Command-S or click on the length indictor in the bottom right hand corner) Chirptastic will contact Bit.ly and automatically shorten any long URLs.

2) Twitpic support. If you want to share a photo with your twitter followers just click File->Uplaod Pic To Twitpic and Chirptastic will uploaded you selected picture to the Twitpic site and paste the URL for your photo directly into the "What are you doing" window.

3) Templates. There are probably some common tweets which you send like a "good morning" type tweet or a "going to bed now" type tweet. Chirptastic offers templates where you can store common tweets and quickly send them. To try out templates go to Templates->Manage Templates or use Command-M.

4) Export. You can now export your current timeline to HTML for archiving on your PC. Try File->Export.

5) Word Wrapping. Chirptastic defaults to a fairly narrow display so that it isn't obtrusive. Some Tweets might contain long URLs which cause the word wrapping to go funny. To combat this Chriptasic tries to present long URLs in a way that fits easily on the default widthed window.

I am very keen to hear feedback including bug reports, annoyances and comments. This beta is just two steps away from the final product so please report any problems.

This release should work on It should work on Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard (i.e. 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6).

ENJOY!!!

Chirptastic Twitter Client For Apple Mac OS X Beta4 Released; Adds Groups

chirptastic-beta4.dmg (6273 KB)

Here is Beta 4 of Chirptastic the Twitter client for Apple Mac OS X.

This version has some great new features including:

1) The support for groups. To create a group click Groups->Manage
Groups or Command-G. To add a user to a group just click the "Group"
link on any of their tweets. To see a group (which means to only see
the tweets by people in that group) then click Groups->GroupName or
Command-1 to Command-9 for your first nine groups.

2) You can now see a list of your friends using View->Friends (or
Command-I). There is a current limitation in that only you latest 100
friends will be shown. This will be fixed in the next beta.

3) You can now see a list of your followers using View->Followers (or
Command-O). There is a current limitation in that only you latest 100
followers will be shown. This will be fixed in the next beta.

4) You can now block users (which means that they are no longer
following you). To do this click on the name of the user in any of
their tweets (or from the followers list) and then click Block.

5) There is better support now for UTF-8 which means that there
shouldn't be any funny characters appearing in the tweets.

I am very keen to hear feedback including bug reports, annoyances and
comments. However bear in mind that this isn’t yet finished. It
probably isn’t worth sending me feature requests yet as I have my own
list as long as my arm!

This release should work on It should work on Tiger, Leopard and Snow
Leopard (i.e. 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6).

Chirptastic Twitter Client For Apple Mac OS X Beta3 Released; Allows Noisy Twitters To Be Sent To Background

chirptastic-beta3.dmg (6038 KB)

Here is Beta 3 of Chirptastic the Twitter client for Apple Mac OS X.

This version has some great new features including:

1) You can now send users who tweet too much to the background. This
will stop them from being displayed on your main timeline but if you
switch to the background view (Apple-Z) you can see the background
tweets. For example if the NY Times is tweeting too much send them to
the background (by clicking Bg on any of their tweets) and they will
disappear. But you haven't unfollowed them, rather they are on a
different screen. Go to the background screen to see the tweets from
these noisy twitterers.

2) The Trends window has been extended (Apple-]) to see the trends.

3) You can now save searches and find them quickly again on the same
search dialog box (Apple-F).

Also don't forget the Shorten feature which will try to shorten your
tweet if it is longer than 140 characters. For example it will replace
the word "and" with the symbol "&" and save a few precious characters.
Try click on the length reminder or press Apple-S.

ENJOY!!!
